The world lost another good man in the last week. This morning we buried JV's dad, former proprietor of Ed's Sporting Goods, all-around great guy, and lover of Coca-Cola and sweet corn.
While most men his age started trimming back strenuous activity like duck hunting in their late 40s, Ed was a physical marvel who hunted and fished actively to his present age of 70. He was planning an Alaska fishing trip for just a couple of weeks from now.
It had been more than five years since I had a conversation with Ed. At the time I never dreamed it would be my last. Damnit.
Speaking with JV's mom this morning she said to me, "He really got a kick out of you." It is always nice to know you were remembered. God knows Ed certainly will be.
Around the nation this week fish relaxed for the first time in half a century. Ed is no longer on the other end of that bait.
