Mohammed Bouyeri confessed to the killing of Theo Van Gogh yesterday. For those who might not remember, Van Gogh was shot over a dozen times, stabbed, had his throat slit, and if memory serves me, had a note pinned to his chest with the knife used to kill him. Van Gogh's offense was the making of a short film that showed the mistreatment of women under Islam.
The man accused of killing Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh confessed to a Dutch court that he acted out of his religious beliefs, saying he would do "exactly the same" if he were ever set free.
"I take complete responsibility for my actions. I acted purely in the name of my religion," 27-year-old Dutch-Moroccan national Mohammed Bouyeri told the court in Amsterdam on the final day of his trial.
Is there anything else we need to know about the religion of peace, and the nature of the enemy?
UPDATE: Blackfive is highlighting Andrew Sullivan, who addresses the "home-grown" nature of the London bombings, Bouyeri, and the ridiculous notion that Iraq is the root of the problem.
Can anyone seriously believe that not invading Iraq would have changed the mindset of this fanatic? Or leaving Afghanistan alone? What we're learning, especially from the home-grown bombings in London, is that our fundamental enemy is a medievalist theological fascism, buried in the recesses of a legitimate religious faith. It would be nice if we could talk these people out of it, or hand them concessions to buy them off, or hug them till they saw the joys of the New Age. Until then, we have to bring them to justice - on the battlefield or court-room. And the people who are most able to bring them to justice are Western Muslims; and the democratically-inclined Muslims in Iraq.
Be sure to also check out The Conservative Man, who compares the editorial response of the NYT to that of ther The Arab News in regards to the London Bombings. Can you guess which source is harder on terrorism?
UPDATE: Hugh Hewitt has this quote from a senior Hamas leader. Could there be hope for a peaceful co-existence?
"It can be a temporary solution, for a maximum of 5 to 10 years. But in the end Palestine must return to become Muslim, and in the long term Israel will disappear from the face of the earth."
Damn...so close.
