Swung past The OxRant tonight, who links the Nancy Pelosi press conference in which she addressed the legislature's reaction to the Supreme Court's decision regarding Kelo v. New London. In at least one response, Pelosi invokes checks and balances, before proceeding to give the judicial branch a rather divine status.
It is a decision of the Supreme Court. If Congress wants to change it, it will require legislation of a level of a constitutional amendment. So this is almost as if God has spoken. It's an elementary discussion now. They have made the decision.
Of course, congress has all the power in the world to design the implementation of a Supreme Court decision as a part of the "checks and balances" that Ms. Pelosi seems to cherish or discard, depending on the day and the issue. The truly scary part though, is her apparent blind faith in the Supreme Court and the infalibility she applies to their decisions. One wonders if she applied that same high regard for their decision to halt the recounts in Florida in 2000, or if she would apply the same blind devotion to any future decision overturning Roe vs. Wade.
Earlier in the same press conference, Pelosi seemed totally unaware of any details regarding House and Senate Republicans efforts to resrtrict funding for projects that don't meet a high standard, and notes her objection to withholding funds from the court itself. (Not surprisingly, the reporter jumps with a save, noting their own misuse of words, not those of Ms. Pelosi.)
From those rather bizarre remarks we move to more from Ms. Pelosi, on the subject of detainees. In this interview, she is being asked if she agrees with the Bush Administration's assessment that we run the risk of detainees returning to the battlefield were they to be released from Camp Delta. It is important to note that these remarks came but days before a helicopter would be shot down in Afghanistan.
Most of the detainees at Guantanamo are from Afghanistan. I assume that the war in Afghanistan is over. Or is the contention that you have that it continues? Is this...you know, most of them arrived there in October...many of them arrived there in October of 2001. The time is long overdue for the administration to establish a policy of how to differentiate. These people were in battle against us, as Mr. Skelton said. They were against the United States. Some of them pose a very serious...may pose a very serious threat to America. Others can be dealt with in a way that helps us focus where the problem really is. So this isn't about the duration of the war. The war in Afghanistan is over.
Many are fond of suggesting that Nancy Pelosi is detached from reality in various ways. I'm certain that I have advanced the notion a time or two myself. But, it becomes less of a stretch when she not only contradicts herself on seperations in the same breath and attributes God-like status to the Supreme Court, but seems utterly and totally unaware that there is a war happening in Afghanistan.
Here's to hoping the Democratic Party keeps her around for awhile. She fills out the set rather nicely.
