On the day that Harry Reid and Russ Feingold team up to set a hard timeline for withdrawl in Iraq, Dan Reihl points out what Reid was saying just two short years ago:
"As far as setting a timeline, as we learned in the Balkans, that's not a wise decision, because it only empowers those who don't want us there, and it doesn't work well to do that."
Sounds logical. So...does this mean Reid wants to empower "those who don't want us there?" Or is he just less wise now?
UPDATE: Maybe he just hasn't seen the polls:
According to a March USA Today/Gallup poll, 61% of Americans oppose “denying the funding needed to send any additional troops to Iraq.”
That poll also showed that only 20% of Americans want to withdraw the troops immediately.
According to a Time magazine poll also taken in March, only 32% want to withdraw the troops within the next year no matter what happens.
Of course, it won't be the American people who roast him over a spit if he displays some sanity. That will come from the people in charge. It will be interesting to see if Barack Obama is as afraid of the nutroots as Reid obviously is.
