There is some bad news on the hockey front tonight; former Gopher Phil Kessel has been diagnosed with testicular cancer:
Kessel, a Boston Bruins rookie drafted No. 5 overall this year, was awaiting surgery and appeared to be in good spirits, the CBS affiliate reported.
Talk about a bright future. Kessel, at the tender age of 19, plays fourth line for the Bruins and has drawn power play duty as well. His production in his rookie season has been nominal, but he holds a great deal of promise for the future provided he can beat the cancer.
One of my best friends overcame this curse a couple of years ago but it was no easy fight. I've lost track of how many rounds of chemo he went through (four, I think), but on the bright side, he came out with all of his talent for screwing off and watching football on television intact.
With any luck, Kessel will retain his talents as well.
In all seriousness, send out some of those positive vibes for Phil and his family will ya? Every little bit helps.
