Kos: Politicize the War, Win the Election

DailyKos is promoting a platform whereby Democrats are able to talk about the war in terms that they don't really subscribe too, but is sure to help them regain power in 2006. Because, after all, it's not winning the war that counts...it's winning elections.

So here are two ways to talk about the war that don't betray weakness:

We have a lot to be proud of over the past three years. We have freed the Iraqi people from a brutal dictator and given them their first taste of freedom...

...We have accomplished what we set out to do -- bring freedom to Iraq and rid the region of the specter of Saddam's terror.

But now it is time to let the Iraqis take charge of their own lives.

Indeed, according to Kos we have transformed an entire nation from that of dictatorship to that of freedom and democracy. Millions of people now enjoy basic freedoms that most have never tasted in their entire lives. And that, my Democratic candidate friends, is a perfect reason to promote a cut-and-run strategy in 2006.

Also, note the very first statement. Is Kos acknowledging that the Democrats have sounded "weak" up until now? That is quite an admission. I think he owes somebody an apology and a resignation.

"Weak" Democrats hoping to "hawk" their way into power may want to beware of Kos' advice however. His advice didn't work too well in the 2004 election, and after all, he was the first person on the left to suggest that Howard Dean would make a great DNC chair. Furthermore, it doesn't appear that Kos has been watching much news lately.

The American public has turned heavily against the war, despite the absence of an anti-war movement, despite the 24/7 cheerleading of the war in the cable news networks, and despite the lack of coherent Democratic opposition to the war. Democrats must ride that wave into 2006, and can do so in ways where they don't sound like hippy retreads.

What is NOT an option is remaining silent on the war, as so many Democrats would obviously prefer. (emphasis added)

To Kos' credit, he did include the word "coherent" in regards to Democratic opposition. That is certainly an element that has been missing. What Kos fails to see is that with all of the successes that he personally lists prior to this statement, opposition to the war is destined to sound incoherent.

To recap, Kos thinks the war has been a great success, and therefore we should elect politicians that are more capable of getting us out of there as soon as possible. The Democrats should deny their own conscience and pretend that they are solidly behind the successes in order to regain power in the house and senate.

Kos reveals something in this piece that most on the right have known since the very beginning. The Democratic (not liberal) opposition to the war is politically driven. It is not that they want the war over or even, dare I say, that they want America to fail. They simply can't stand that Republicans might get credit for it. For them, Kos has a plan to get elected, get in charge, and ultimately, take credit for any positive things that result in Iraq.

What a great American he is.

UPDATE: If there is anyone who actually buys Kos' nonsense that American media has acted as a "cheerleader" for the war, here is The Good News In Iraq Part 30 from Chrenkoff. Ask yourself, how many of these things were you made aware of through main-stream media sources....(chirp, chirp, chirp)...That's what I thought.
