HOW EXACTLY ARE WE SUPPOSED TO TRUST senators like Robert Byrd to run the affairs of this nation when he can't remember conversations he had two days ago?

First, the question from Bill Frist on the floor of the senate:

Didn't you also say as the other part of that statement, to the president of the United States...that you would give all of these nominees an up or down vote on the floor of the United States Senate?

Byrd's response:

Well, just as the Senator's had a little difficulty recalling whether I said this or that, I didn't have a written text before him, when I spoke to the president. I don't remember whether I said a few, or all, or three of four, I don't remember.

Radioblogger's summations:

Frist had the goods, Byrd had to fall back to the Hillary Clinton defense, the "I can't recall" defense, and looked rather inept. Here he is, on the floor of the Senate for an hour, bemoaning the dire consequences of this option being triggered, even though he did it four times himself, and is pleading for a compromise. He had the ear of the president, brought up this issue himself, offered up voting on these seven, and now can't recall what he said?

For a listen to Byrd's recent, long-winded sermon from the book of Esther as a defense for the filibuster, go here.

One wonders if the good people of West Virginia continue to be interested in providing senate representation, or if they just think the rest of us need some comic relief.
